	OverviewAs part of a major modernization initiative, NYPL made the decision to move beyond its existing e-reading app, SimplyE, and develop a completely new product from the ground up. Backed by key stakeholders, the project focused on addressing longstanding user pain points, introducing essential features missing from SimplyE, and building a more intuitive, flexible platform for readers.

The new eReader app goes beyond digital borrowing—it reimagines the full reading experience by integrating both print and digital lending into a single, user-friendly ecosystem. The scope spans mobile platforms (iOS and Android), catalog integration, vendor selection, content curation, and rethinking how the library engages patrons in both digital and physical spaces.

1.1 Research: SimplyE Audit &#38;amp; Asking Our Patrons

	In the initial phase of the NYPL e-reading app redesign (September to October 2021), we conducted an audit of SimplyE paired with user research. Interviews with 10 readers and 8 recommenders helped identify key issues like onboarding challenges, device compatibility, and a need for a more personalized experience. These insights informed the design of a more user-friendly and intuitive platform, guiding our subsequent sprint planning and design efforts.

	“The biggest thing is people wanting to read on their phones...a lot of times if you look it up, their device is not compatible. A lot of our patrons have very old technology...The patrons that are not tech savvy...they're the ones that come to the branch. And helping them is obviously going to be a bit more difficult because they do not have that technology.”

- Elissa, Librarian, Kips Bay

“I change the font size... I like reading really big words as if I'm, you know, elderly. I don't know why, it's just my preferred way...I also prefer reading [on the Kindle] because I don't really get, like the shine that I get on the phone…And the fact that when I'm on my Kindle, I can't get distracted by things on my phone.”

 - Lauren, Simply-E User
	“All the covers are helpful from a visual perspective...if I'm in a mood where I don't really know what I want, the staff picks are most helpful for me because it's easier...it's kind of pre-selected by a human already.”

- Nancy, E-Reading User

1.2 Research: In-App Hard Copy Checkout Research Workshop

	The physical checkout process was particularly complex, touching multiple systems and departments. I co-led a 2-hour in-person workshop alongside the Head of Product &#38;amp; Design, Director of Product, and Associate Director.We invited cross-departmental NYPL staff to co-create solutions, guiding teams through rapid ideation using a “Crazy 8’s” framework. Each group selected and iterated on their strongest idea, presenting workflows for how print lending could be integrated into the app without overloading the user or the system.You can find a short video of the workshop here.

1.3 Research: Understanding the Holds Process

	As part of NYPL’s initiative to integrate print book reservations into the NYPL Reader app, I partnered with Product Manager Risa Wolf, to conduct a listening tour across four library branches. We interviewed seven librarians to map the end-to-end process of placing and managing print holds.

Our research revealed systemic challenges, including manual processing inefficiencies, patron confusion between print and eBook holds, and unclear communication around hold statuses. Despite branch-specific nuances, common themes emerged—particularly around outdated workflows and user misunderstandings.

Key recommendations included enhancing app features with progress tracking, clearer notifications, and visual guidance to better educate patrons. We also identified opportunities to refine physical hold slips and improve language consistency across touchpoints. This work would lay the foundation for user-centered solutions that bridge digital and physical library experiences.

2.1 Wireframing: Format Selection and Checkout
A major focus of my work was clarifying the checkout experience across eBooks, audiobooks, and—for the library’s first time—physical books. There was such a major focus on this flow because it was the essence of our mission, bridging the gap between our physical and digital spaces for patrons.

&#60;img width="3501" height="2910" width_o="3501" height_o="2910" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b34e2c8ee395256d66f9a1d01425629669e40c891bc16566987ae16cdd93d979/All-Books.png" data-mid="231632891" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b34e2c8ee395256d66f9a1d01425629669e40c891bc16566987ae16cdd93d979/All-Books.png" /&#62;

2.2 Wireframing: Search and Browse
Examining our users' methods of book exploration and search constituted a pivotal focus area. In the past, the search functionality in SimplyE proved lackluster, failing to encourage thorough app exploration. In the pursuit of effective browsing and searching within our app, I delved into examples from other platforms that adeptly guide users in optimizing their quest for desired content.
To inform these efforts, I analyzed discovery flows in adjacent apps like Spotify, Goodreads, and Libby, identifying best practices for guiding users toward content that feels relevant, fresh, and engaging.
&#60;img width="3780" height="2136" width_o="3780" height_o="2136" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a48ef425620423d9b2a18260865d870ddac5e1e27864898ed16cbeecbc6c018e/Current-Search-v1.png" data-mid="231640561" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a48ef425620423d9b2a18260865d870ddac5e1e27864898ed16cbeecbc6c018e/Current-Search-v1.png" /&#62;

2.3 Wireframing: Audiobook Player
The SimplyE app lacked support for audiobooks, making it essential for the new app to not only accommodate audiobook formats but also optimize key features for a seamless listening experience. Our priorities focused on getting core functionalities right, including narration speed control, a sleep timer, table of contents navigation, and bookmark management.

3.1 Mid-Fi Designs &#38;amp; Tech: Discovery &#38;amp; Book Detail
As the Digital department, we shared our progress to gain buy-in and align teams across the library system. While shaping the branding, we developed a mid-fidelity app to help engineers visualize core components and anticipate code restructuring. This approach intentionally stripped away some in-progress features to focus on the core user journey of the e-reading experience. By clearly communicating that these designs were exploratory and intended for internal staff, we fostered transparency and collaboration across teams.

These designs enabled engineers to build a functional version of the app, which was released to internal staff via TestFlight for early testing and feedback.

3.2 Mid-Fi Design &#38;amp; Tech: Search &#38;amp; Browse

	The new landing search page allows patrons to search directly or browse genre collections in one place. Tapping the search bar surfaces recent searches—a frequent patron request for tracking book availability. As users type, smart suggestions appear, indicating whether results are authors, titles, or series to streamline the process. Search results include filter and sort options, along with a grid or list view toggle for a more personalized browsing experience.
	Recent searches
“This is a helpful way for me to remember...in Libby I think it retains my last 10 or 20 searches. I often reference that when I see if a title I decided to hold off on is now available.”

3.3 Mid-Fi Design &#38;amp; Tech: Audiobook Player Designs
	The audiobook UI didn’t need to be overly complex or stray from familiar audio player patterns. Instead, we focused on subtle enhancements that improve usability, accessibility, and bring the interface to life. A soft, pulsing color—sourced from a blurred version of the book cover—adds a dynamic touch, breaking the static experience while providing a gentle visual cue for play and pause states.

To further support accessibility and precision, we refined the progress marker interaction. Patrons can press and hold the marker, triggering a time indicator above their thumb for accurate navigation to the desired timestamp.

4.1 User Testing: Prototype for Patrons
In partnership with UX Researcher Lily Mathews, we conducted 12 remote 1:1 moderated interviews to test low-fidelity prototypes, focusing on two core user groups: Libby users and SimplyE users. We explored how patrons search, browse, and evaluate books—paying close attention to the decision point where they choose to engage with a title. Our goal was to validate new interaction patterns that promote deeper exploration, addressing areas where SimplyE had previously fallen short.

	Choosing a format

“Usually I'm not browsing for a physical book. I'm looking for a particular title. Depending on how quickly I need or want it, I will get the e-copy because most of the time, I’m impatient. I'll take whatever’s available.”

- Aimee, SimplyE &#38;amp; Libby User
	Recent searches

“Sometimes I’ll have a title on my list to look up. Other times, it’ll be late at night in bed and I’m just looking for something to start. It just depends.”

- AC, SimplyE User

	Aesthetic
“It has a really fresh feel to it. Sometimes when I think about libraries, I think old, outdated. But this gives bright and inviting and it seems very easy to navigate, which I think is the most important thing.”

 - Bianca, Libby User

5.1 Branding: Branding &#38;amp; Strategic Influence

	Beyond UX, I saw an opportunity to reframe NYPL’s visual and cultural presence. Partnering with Lily Tran, Senior Product Designer for Digital Collections, we curated a shortlist of branding agencies to elevate NYPL’s identity as both the fourth largest library and a forward-thinking cultural institution. My pitch to leadership focused on leveraging design to strengthen ties with New York’s creative communities, leading to a partnership with Linked By Air—whose success with The Book of Hov helped secure buy-in.

Over the course of a year, I worked alongside Linked By Air and internal departments on naming, branding, and component design. I provided key frames from our mid-fidelity prototypes to guide the creation of branded components. This was a pivotal moment, as it marked the first time many teams engaged directly with a design agency. I helped bridge conversations across departments, distilling varied feedback into clear direction that prioritized the app’s true needs. Together, we restructured designs to balance internal input with a cohesive, future-facing product vision.

6.1 The Future
As we welcome a new Chief for the Digital Department, we have restructured some priorities and have delayed the release of this app. Originally slated for November it has been pushed to spring of next year with talks of expanding the app as a more grand, all encompassing, library app for the entire NYPL system. This could potentially include research, branch-by-branch needs, and much more.
Our current focus is developing a robust design system that defines and organizes these design elements, behaviors, and guidelines.

Stay tuned!&#38;nbsp;

	Overview
The New York Public Library was preparing to launch its largest exhibition to date, The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library's Treasures. At the time, NYPL lacked a digital presence for exhibition pages and had no living audio guide. I had the opportunity to take on both challenges—designing the exhibition website and developing the accompanying audio guide—as my first project at the Library, helping bring these treasures to life for a wider audience.
	My Role &#38;amp; the Team
UX Designer
Product Manager -&#38;nbsp;Miguel Rayos-Velazquez
Director of Product Design - Sharon DenningDirector of Exhibitions - Declan Kiely

Engineering Team - Advomatic (Vendor)&#38;nbsp;

1.1 Wireframes: Exhibition Pages
My first step was to establish a clear understanding of how users would engage with the exhibition by mapping a visual user journey to align requested features with real user needs. To further support this, I invited my friend Colin from The Whitney Museum’s digital team to share insights on the advantages, challenges, and lessons learned from their own exhibition pages and audio guide development.

With the user flows approved and tight timelines in place, we moved directly into design. The project fell under NYPL’s Digital Experience (DXP) portfolio, which manages the main website and was in the early stages of developing a design system shared across three portfolios. The exhibition pages and audio guide became a proving ground—a kind of "Mr./Ms. Potato Head"—for this evolving system. Throughout the process, I identified and designed missing components, helping to fill critical gaps and strengthen the foundation of our growing design system.

&#60;img width="4269" height="4654" width_o="4269" height_o="4654" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/82a11a38cf837415c8e7c498ac69a0255bef31eb8f51bca6298ccdf5eabc1540/exhibitionuserjourney.png" data-mid="231669847" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/82a11a38cf837415c8e7c498ac69a0255bef31eb8f51bca6298ccdf5eabc1540/exhibitionuserjourney.png" /&#62;1.2 Wireframes: Audio Guide

A critical aspect of this project was ensuring seamless access to the audio guide. We knew that if patrons encountered frustration at the start of their journey, it would negatively impact their overall experience. Initially, I was told patrons would “just” type in a URL to access the guide—a solution I quickly flagged as problematic. The original web address was too long, creating unnecessary friction, especially for older adults or visually impaired users. While we shortened the URL, I advocated for a more intuitive approach: introducing QR codes, not only for the full collection but also for each individual piece. This provided faster, easier access—whether patrons wanted to explore the entire guide or engage with a single item of interest.

Language accessibility was another key consideration. While NYPL faces significant challenges in achieving true multi-language support across digital platforms, we identified practical solutions to help bridge this gap and reduce frustration for non-English-speaking patrons.&#38;nbsp;
&#60;img width="3929" height="4373" width_o="3929" height_o="4373" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4b51e3d40ab215ab7fec5c163425ca504ba495d9c9b343a9245308d210fe0bbe/audioguide.png" data-mid="231670255" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4b51e3d40ab215ab7fec5c163425ca504ba495d9c9b343a9245308d210fe0bbe/audioguide.png" /&#62;
2.1 Design System: Components

	At this time, the entire product design team was fairly new at the library. While we all had our own projects, we simultanousely worked on the design system that would bring all of our projects consistency. This particular project had a lot of components that were not yet in our system. Particularly the slideshow, audio player, and even content cards.

3.1 UI Design: Audio Guide

	Most components were built using the library’s design system, but I took every opportunity to push the design further—especially with accessibility in mind. Users could access the audio guide by typing the shortened URL or, more seamlessly, by using our QR code system. Once in, they could easily switch languages if needed. Scrolling down, users would see a list of on-display exhibition items, allowing them to explore in order or select specific pieces of interest.

On each item page, users are presented with the image, title, and a full audio transcript. Ensuring the inclusion of transcripts was a priority for me, as it reinforced our commitment to making the experience accessible to all patrons, including those who are hearing impaired or who prefer reading alongside listening.

The Audio guide is currently live and can be viewed in real time on both desktop and mobile devices&#38;nbsp;here.
	&#60;img width="875" height="1738" width_o="875" height_o="1738" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/84ecb6880352624534e03fdc79cd2fd4fda87b80dfdd245bd037a1fd9ead180b/treasureslist.png" data-mid="231676151" border="0" data-scale="44" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/875/i/84ecb6880352624534e03fdc79cd2fd4fda87b80dfdd245bd037a1fd9ead180b/treasureslist.png" /&#62;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="875" height="1738" width_o="875" height_o="1738" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b5d45f2b9ba8bcb30b5279cf91287a00f32ae65003e2476430848d15dd49cf12/audioguidetranscript.png" data-mid="231676153" border="0" data-scale="44" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/875/i/b5d45f2b9ba8bcb30b5279cf91287a00f32ae65003e2476430848d15dd49cf12/audioguidetranscript.png" /&#62;

3.2 UI Design: Exhibition Pages

The exhibition pages provide access to both audio-guided items and pieces not currently on display. The core goal was to create an online experience that feels as seamless and engaging as visiting the physical exhibition. Features like the slideshow navigation—with previews of the next or previous item on hover—and a list of remaining exhibition items beneath the selected piece allow users to explore intuitively, whether browsing in sequence or jumping between items spontaneously.

The Exhibition pages are currently live and can be viewed in real time on both desktop and mobile devices here.

	&#60;img width="2560" height="4632" width_o="2560" height_o="4632" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cd3f0120787a1590be906a2f94313b4abac6c49e38ec96a809a837225c54348b/PORTRAIT-OF-MARY.png" data-mid="231675676" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cd3f0120787a1590be906a2f94313b4abac6c49e38ec96a809a837225c54348b/PORTRAIT-OF-MARY.png" /&#62;

	4.1 User Research: PreparationFor the TWP project, we conducted remote user testing to validate the strategic vision for NYPL’s new exhibition web pages and audio guide. We segmented participants into three key user groups: Sightseers, Researchers, and General Public, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives including tourists, students, librarians, and museum professionals.

Using low-fidelity prototypes, we tested both mobile and desktop experiences, focusing on how users navigated the audio guide, exhibition galleries, and key interaction points. Our approach prioritized understanding user expectations, ease of navigation, clarity of terminology, and accessibility—particularly around audio player functionality and content structure.

The sessions were designed to identify pain points early, focusing on user flow rather than unfinished features. Insights from these tests informed critical decisions, such as simplifying access to the audio guide, refining content organization, and addressing language clarity. Data was captured through detailed observation, structured questionnaires, and follow-up discussions to guide iterative improvements.

4.2 User Research: Results
	User testing showed positive reception across all user groups. Participants found the experience intuitive, with no major usability issues requiring redesign.Conclusion:No major UI changes were needed, but thoughtful editorial refinements and a persistent audio player feature were identified as key enhancements to improve user experience.
	Navigation &#38;amp; Usability:&#38;nbsp;Users reported ease of navigation and clear understanding of core features. Both the Audio Guide and Exhibition Galleries were well-received.

Audio Player Improvement:&#38;nbsp;The main recommendation was to implement a persistent audio player, allowing users to continue listening while navigating between pages—enhancing multitasking and overall experience.

Editorial Adjustments:&#38;nbsp;Several minor changes were suggested to improve clarity, such as renaming labels (e.g., “Filter by Language” instead of “Language”) and providing more descriptive summaries to guide users, especially older demographics.

Content Structure:&#38;nbsp;Users generally understood the structure of galleries but found terms like “Themes” unclear. A shift to more intuitive language like “Explore the Exhibition” was recommended.

Feature Requests:&#38;nbsp;Users expressed interest in additional features, such as image zoom or lightbox functionality for a richer viewing experience.

	This is frustrating to me for one reason. She [audio guide voice] speaks very slowly, so I would want to forward her because her voice drives minutes. I’d pause the audio but where there’s a bar and I can’t really glide and it’s not reacting to me. There’s forward and backward which to me seems that I should be able to glide the bar. But if I hit the forward I’m in the next painting. One arrow means moving one item left or right.

-&#38;nbsp;Anna Labykina, 45, Sightseer, mobile audio guide test

	I would rely mostly on physical navigation through the space, taking photographs etc. Whenever I go to every place I read what is the significance.

 -&#38;nbsp;Satinder Thakral, 65, Sightseer, mobile audio guide test

	I would expect to be able to zoom into the image of the writing a little bit more to get information on it. I see the catalog, that’s good. I would assume that the links are locations in the library. This is also good because I’ve used online library resources and based on this I could find more related resources to this item.
- Maria De Los Angeles Rodriguez Jimenez, 28, Desktop exhibition gallery test

5.1 DevelopmentWith the successful outcome of user testing and only minimal adjustments needed, we were ready to kick off development with Advomatic, our outsourced engineering partner. As a Product Designer, I worked closely with their team to ensure accurate execution of the designs—bridging the gap between design intent and technical implementation.
Throughout the process, I provided continuous visual QA, clarifying design details, addressing edge cases, and collaborating on solutions when technical constraints arose. Working alongside engineers required clear communication, flexibility, and a shared focus on delivering a polished, user-centered experience.

6.1 The Launch
The exhibition pages and audio guide are currently live. Visit the New York Public Library’s permanent collection in person at the Bryant Park branch! Feel free to tell me what you think ;)

	OverviewWe began with basic Word document surveys for restaurant and client onboarding, but this quickly highlighted the need for a more organized file uploader and a more engaging, intuitive space for clients to complete content and design surveys.

This strategic shift recognized client onboarding as equally critical as employee onboarding—shaping first impressions, setting expectations, and building trust through a personalized, seamless experience. By streamlining processes and introducing visually impactful touchpoints, we reduced friction while creating opportunities for upselling and retention. A well-crafted onboarding experience not only set clients up for success and reduced churn but also reinforced our commitment to addressing their unique needs and maintaining industry standards.

	My Role
UX Designer
Collaborated with project managers to address both internal pain points and enhance the customer experience.

1. Onboarding Questionaire

Previously, restaurant owners were sent a static Word document to capture their ideas and intentions for their new website. While project managers felt the content of the questions was still relevant, the format often discouraged owners from completing it, as it felt tedious and impersonal.

To address this, we transformed the questionnaire into a more engaging and efficient experience. We retained the core questions but redesigned how they were presented—introducing interactive elements that guided users through the process smoothly. Owners could select from commonly used keywords and answer questions one at a time, creating a sense of progress rather than overwhelm.

Recognizing the importance of setting expectations, we also incorporated a progress bar, giving users clear visibility into how far along they were and how close they were to completion. This thoughtful approach reduced friction, encouraged completion, and made the onboarding process feel more intuitive and purposeful.

	&#60;img width="12000" height="8533" width_o="12000" height_o="8533" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bcfed4ad8c20533c559a0bf563c4b54465b484875241a57b1e260cf124ef93f4/Adjectives-WIP_112518-1.jpg" data-mid="182964775" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bcfed4ad8c20533c559a0bf563c4b54465b484875241a57b1e260cf124ef93f4/Adjectives-WIP_112518-1.jpg" /&#62;

2. Asset Uploader&#38;nbsp;
	The asset uploader is a crucial component across digital platforms, content management systems, and creative workflows—enabling seamless content integration, efficient management, and enhanced user engagement. By simplifying the upload and organization of files like images, videos, and documents, it provides intuitive interfaces, supports bulk uploads, and ensures quality through validation and metadata.

To address a major pain point, we redesigned the onboarding experience for restaurant owners and managers, replacing the disorganized flow of email submissions with a streamlined, user-friendly asset uploader. This shift empowered clients to easily manage their content, transforming their onboarding experience and significantly improving our ability to deliver tailored, well-designed sites efficiently.
	&#60;img width="629" height="1308" width_o="629" height_o="1308" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8e93f11ed47481285194ea2227ed32161c9adb7fbb5124f20e553064a879c5ef/AssetUploaderDsktopMobile-2.png" data-mid="231680427" border="0" data-scale="35" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/629/i/8e93f11ed47481285194ea2227ed32161c9adb7fbb5124f20e553064a879c5ef/AssetUploaderDsktopMobile-2.png" /&#62;

3. Website Inspiration

	We often struggled to get restaurant owners to share visual inspiration or clearly communicate their aesthetic preferences and desired features for their websites. To address this, we curated an extensive gallery of websites we had previously designed, allowing owners to easily select examples that resonated with their vision. This streamlined the process, provided clearer creative direction, and helped align expectations from the start of onboarding.

	Overview
Tajh Rust is a visual artist based in New York. Through figuration and abstraction, he explores the relationships between black identity and space. Focusing on the user’s journey and experience through the site, it was important to create functionalities that allowed Tajh’s audience to see the intimate moments in his paintings.
Projects like these give me the freedom to push creative boundaries beyond corporate or institutional constraints, allowing space for true innovation and the opportunity to bring bold ideas—and dreams—to life.

Designed by Albert L. Hicks IV and myself for our joint studio Ayem.

1. Ideation
This project operated on a tight timeline, with a hard launch deadline to coincide with the artist’s exhibition. As part of a community of artists, we understood the importance of balancing aesthetic simplicity to let the work speak for itself with the practical needs of an artist’s portfolio. Beyond showcasing his art, Tajh needed a platform that could communicate his background, highlight press coverage, and attract potential buyers or galleries interested in exhibiting his work.

With these goals in mind, we focused on creating a clean, elegant site enhanced by thoughtful interactions. One of my favorite features is the magnifying glass on the landing page, allowing viewers to explore the fine details of his featured pieces—a subtle yet impactful tool designed for art enthusiasts who appreciate craftsmanship up close.

2. Mobile Experience

	We aimed to optimize the mobile experience by allowing the artwork to take center stage while maintaining enough breathing room for a clean, elegant presentation. Knowing that both desktop and mobile experiences would be equally important for an artist’s portfolio, we designed the mobile view to feel like a refined exhibition cheat sheet—showcasing the works alongside key details like pricing. This approach not only created a visually appealing archive of the artist’s work but also made it effortless to browse by category or year, blending accessibility with aesthetic impact.

		<description>
	Ayem
art direction, graphic design, textiles, film, and more.

Ayem, founded by designers Albert L. Hicks IV and Marcus Washington Jr., is a design and research platform shaped by the ways communities, spaces, and objects influence culture. Grounded in authenticity and led by curiosity, Ayem moves fluidly across disciplines, rethinking what design can be. Their work leans into the tension between exclusion and inclusion, using visual language to amplify marginalized voices and weave new narratives that quietly break the rules. Our clients include A24, The Whitney Museum, The Studio Museum, Columbia University, and others.&#38;nbsp;
